Nov 05, 2011 · I have had 2 boats where I have had to get the mast up and down, both with a single bolt through the mast foot. The First 18 I could easily do it on my own with nothing more than a crutch to lower it into. The 20'er I have a pole from the base of the mast to the end of the forestay and a rope from there down to the bow roller and back to a winch.

The Open Boat Analysis

On its surface, "The Open Boat" is a dutifully objective retelling of the experience of four men on a lifeboat. It's the kind of disaster story that we are familiar with reading about in the newspaper—but within that structure, it deepens and widens.

the meth of sailing – Sailing Anarchy

Aug 13, 2014 · With the boat on a mooring, I went to work for two months; working on the new mast, prepping the boat, freelancing as a sailing writer and helping with odd jobs in exchange for welding on the mast. In late May, I moved the boat into the harbor and myself and a hearty crew stepped my new turbo Morgan 27 rig using the rig of a 35-foot race boat.

The Log of Spartina: May 2016

When daylight gets to the other side of the world Webb should be heading into Bundaberg, Australia. It looks like he had several days of excellent sailing and a couple of days of very light winds. I'll be looking forward to reading his passage log which will probably appear here in a few days.-----

John Vigor's Blog: Small dinghies on open sea

Jul 16, 2015 · By the way, if you take the mast down, cover the cockpit and let the boat drift, you turn your boat in a liferaft. For me that’s not sailing, that’s surviving. 5. About your book recommendation, thank you! I am already familiar with Frank Dye, but I will order the book from Webb Chiles.

On This Day

Catalina 25 vs. Hunter 25

trailer sailing I really can't advise you on a Catalina 25 vs Hunter. I had an Aquarius 23 that I kept on a trailer for one year. I do know that setting up the mast and launching the boat each time I went sailing got to be very old after a while. I finally kept the boat on a slip the last two years that I had her and enjoyed the boat a lot more.

A Speck on the Sea

Francis Brenton, Shane Acton, and Webb Chiles forswore the comfort of the modern world repeatedly so as not to be seduced from their quests for personal fulfillment. There was something about the ocean—the process of sailing and constantly challenging Fate—that made the twentieth-century conveniences that most men seek seem not worth it.

Conversion to Gunter Rig

Mar 16, 2016 · Just read that Webb Chiles had the mast and boom stiffened and upsized the standard rigging on his Moore 24 Gannet. He also added running backstays as he does considerable sailing in strong winds under jib alone. Definitely makes sense.
